An active role in sustainable forest management

Raw materials

Responsible management: a serious commitment for Alpi

As a company operating in the wood sector, Alpi is particularly sensitive to issues such as the preservation of raw materials (wood is a renewable raw material) and has always acted in full compliance with the environmental protection legislation in force in the countries in which it operates. For the production of multilaminar veneer, Alpi spa uses poplar from Italian plantations as well as Ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon, also known as Obeche or Samba), a very common tree species that grows in extensive areas of tropical Africa and is present in large quantities in the company’s own concessions.

In Cameroon
The Alpi group operates in full compliance with current legislation, considered to be amongst the most stringent in the Congo basin in terms of forest stewardship and the environment. All the group’s forestry concessions are managed in strict accordance with management plans drawn up to assure the sustainability of forest resources.
The Alpi group is actively committed to a policy of low environmental impact forestry exploitation through an ongoing process of personnel training in order to optimise the following operations: low-impact directional felling, optimised management of the opening of roads and log yards, rational management of mechanical equipment and the use of tracked vehicles only when strictly necessary. This enables the natural habitat to return to normal rapidly once the logging activities have been completed.
The Alpi group’s strict observance of legislation and continuous improvement of its processes demonstrates its commitment to assuring a continuous supply of raw materials for the future.
Responsible forest management also has other important benefits. Strict management plans which authorise a level of felling in accordance with programmed reforestation ensure that the forest’s capacity to absorb and store carbon dioxide is maintained, thus making a tangible contribution to combating the greenhouse effect.

In Italy
The use of Italian-grown poplar, plantation timber whose origin is certified by SGS, is a low-environmental impact choice and contributes to promoting the use of local agricultural resources. The origin of the poplar is fully traceable and subject to regular inspections.
